About Alexander City Housing Authority

The Housing Authority of the City of Alexander City (ACHA) was chartered as a non-profit corporation in 1966 by the State of Alabama to provide decent, safe and sanitary housing to the low-income citizens of Alexander City. By contract with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as provided by the U.S. Housing Act of 1937, the Authority, a Public Housing Agency (PHA), is governed by a local 5 member Board of Commissioners. The Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor and each serve a 5 year term. The Board elects a chairman and vice-chairman each year at the annual meeting.

ACHA operates 477 public housing units and 265 Section 8 Voucher units within Alexander City assisting about 1500 people or about 10% of the area population. Funding comes from HUD, local rental receipts, investments and grants. ACHA currently has 22 full-time and 4 part-time employees and a varying number of subcontractors who work in our Capital Fund Program. ACHA operates the Public Housing Program, the Housing Choice Voucher Program, Family Self Sufficiency Program, a Youth and Adult Services Program, a Homeownership Program, and a ROSS/Elderly program .
